Generating opportunities to favor intellectual and cultural exchange initiatives is one of the UCM Global purposes through teaching-projects matched with different institutions around the world.
This new possibility is known as Virtual Exchange (VE), Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL), Global Learning Experience (GLE) which forges alliances among universities in the world interested in creating and developing projects with common topics that benefit academic processes in the institutions along with multicultural learning experiences.
Last Thursday June 13, DePaul University (Chicago, Illinois) shared with 30 professors from Universidad Catolica de Manizales some Global Learning Experiences they have successfully applied. Through a video-conference, they explained their strategy to match universities with kindred academic interests and to develop projects through virtual and technological tools. This is based on three main elements: empathy building between the groups in a way they get to know each other; specific content sessions related to the project and a common subject; and the possibility to reflect about the differences and benefits of working with people from different regions in the world.
This Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) benefits teachers involved in the project as well as the group in charge to develop it. These exchanges are a great opportunity for those visionary teachers to widen their perspective regarding their pedagogical practices, to obtain disciplinary and cultural growth and to propose new teaching strategies encouraging active and collaborative learning.
Unquestionably, students participating in this initiative will strengthen global competences, virtual collaborative skills and will make part of a cultural environment immersion focused on a common interest. In addition, they will experience how to work in an international project with experts around a specific topic.
